La Marta Wildlife Refuge
Turrialba - Pejibaye
La Marta Wildlife Refuge, located in Pejibaye, forms part of the Amistad Biosphere Reserve, which UNESCO has designated as a World Natural Heritage Site. Stretching over 1,500 hectares, La Marta is a center for local and international researchers.
The reserve's intense hydro and geological wealth is significant. Within the refuge, one can observe a system of rivers with crystalline waters, waterfalls and ancient caverns.
The area's flora and fauna combine the tropical rainforest with the Caribbean. It's moist here, with an average relative humidity of 90%.
Two previously unknown orchid species have been found here. Additionally, the presence of a gorgeous butterfly with transparent wings has been detected here, the Ithomia bolivari.
This species is only found in Costa Rica's Caribbean lowlands. The discoveries have only recently begun. There is an impressive diversity of fungi, ferns, lichens and hepatics. There are plants that can be used for food, dies, chemical products, and medicinal purposes.
This opens the doors for scientific research in benefit of all humanity.

¿What to bring? Closed-toed shoes (hiking shoes always the best), sunblock, bug spray, hat/cap, water, rain gear or ponchos, extra food, medicines, binoculars, cameras, extra clothes, rubber boots.
